Incubus makes it look easy
Review: The band's great Greek opener once again proves it is a cut above
the rest of the modern-rock fray.
By BEN WENER
The Orange County Register
Incubus has rarely been the sort of band to break into between-song banter
at gigs – the most you usually get are some sincere "thanks, boys and
girls" from vocalist Brandon Boyd and maybe a not-completely-audible
muttering or two. So it was endearing and even a little humanizing to
witness a bit of off-the-cuff playfulness just before "Wish You Were Here"
concluded the quintet's first of two standing-room-only shows Tuesday
night at the Greek Theatre.
It began when guitarist Mike Einziger noticed a bug near his foot pedals
apparently as large as a golf ball and motioned Boyd over to check it out.
"It's not poisonous" Boyd determined after first handing it to a fan in
the pit to examine, then accidentally dropping it somewhere in the array
of drummer José Pasillas' kit while insisting the overgrown insect was
nothing more than a beetle.
That still gave Pasillas the willies, though, as he leapt from his stool
while bassist Ben Kenney, upon hearing the word "beetle," slipped into the
riff from "Day Tripper." "Look at how (bleeping) scared he is right now,"
Boyd told the crowd, again reassuring a twitching Pasillas (while a roadie
recovered the bug-beast) that "it may be July, but it's just a junebug."
"I'm glad you guys could see tonight," Boyd remarked, remembering some
6,000-plus people were watching. "We are so professional."
Actually, they are – and in the best way possible. In a modern-rock world
overrun by Nickelback clones and flat-footed hangers-on who were
momentarily popular at the turn of the millennium, Incubus is that rare
exception: an ever-evolving unit with a distinct style that continues to
incorporate influences and detours few other bands of its ilk would dare.
It helps, too, that they have arguably the most powerful singer in all of
hard rock at the moment – note those non-falsetto high ones Boyd reaches
with effortless force and tell me who else still in action can measure up.
But what really sets Incubus apart – what has come to form the backbone of
its deepening arsenal of infectious blasts and roaring anthems – is its
across-the-board first-rate musicianship.
