Fergie's VIP Verizon Tour
By Kevin Johnson
POST-DISPATCH POP MUSIC CRITIC
06/12/2007
If Fergie’s VIP Verizon Tour that played a packed Pageant Monday night
really represented the future of concerts with all its technical hubbub,
maybe we’ll just wait until the next phase.
The female Black Eyed Pea is out on her first-ever solo tour, a hyped to
the heavens affair full of innovation and interactivity. By night’s end
however, it mostly felt like the low-end of high tech. There were cute
touches such as fans’ picture and text-messaging ("Everyone who is
Fergalicious now scream!") projected onscreen, but that was already seen,
at least in part, on Fall Out Boy’s latest tour.
The real innovation with this free concert was in lieu of paper tickets,
Fergie’s Verizon cell phone holders downloaded Fergie ringtones to receive
picture message tickets. Those without Verizon phones could go to a
Verizon store for a paper ticket, though deciphering which stores actually
had tickets proved frustrating for some fans (Verizon employees whose
stores weren’t participating were clueless).
Outside of these new trappings, the pop star’s concert was standard stuff.
Fergie, who seemed off-balance and disconnected, only pulled it together
thanks to her four energetic hip-hop dancers and her band. They helped
move her through songs from her hits-stacked "The Dutchess" CD including
"Fergalicious," "London Bridge," "Big Girls Don’t Cry" and "Glamorous."
