Slayer's hot, Manson's not

By Jim Harrington

One might assume that the person who came up the idea to package Marilyn Manson and Slayer on the same tour knew little about the two acts.

Musically speaking, this is a marriage that has almost nothing going for it. Manson is a shock rocker, one who seems increasingly tame as the years go by, and he isn't afraid of recording a song with a catchy melody. Slayer is a thrash metal troupe, an act that is as heavy as ever, and it apparently thinks melodies are for wimps. (And they are, of course, right about that.)

Their two fan bases are distinct, sharing little in common besides a penchant for black clothing, and they seemingly wouldn't mix even during a clearance sale at Hot Topic.

The thought of the highly credible Slayer opening for a gimmick-loving yahoo like Manson was nothing short of sacrilege for fans of the former. On the flipside, Slayer's straightforward performance style must seem like a bore to those who love Manson's theatrics.

Combine all those factors and the result was only a half-full house for the tour's stop on Thursday night at the Sleep Train Pavilion in Concord. Mind you, either of the acts -- especially Slayer -- could have probably drawn approximately as large a crowd on its own
