Metal, pyrotechnics in a head-on collision
News Pop Music Critic

Labor Day went off with a bang at Darien Lake on Monday evening, as modern metal and pyrotechnics met head-on for a high-decibel bacchanal before a large crowd of fist-pumping metal heads.

Rob Zombie and Godsmack, both taking pages from the Kiss, Metallica and Alice Cooper manifestos, melded visuals to tightly paced sets of gloomy metal, punctuated by smoke and explosions. It was all exciting to digest, visually speaking. The music, however, was largely unremarkable.

Zombie and his band, featuring former Marilyn Manson guitarist John 5, offered a set of tunes highlighting the recent "Educated Horses" album.

Opening with an animated "American Witch," Zombie and his band laid down their agenda - a visceral wallop of sound blending a sort of metal-billy approach with a "Monster Mash" mentality, sometimes spooky and sometimes just plain gross.

"Living Dead Girl" got a serious rise out of the crowd, as Zombie delved into his guttural howl and John 5 skipped manically across the stage, basking in his own spasmodic "guitar-face" glory.
