ELTON'S GARDEN PARTY
ROCKET MAN ROCKS MSG ON 60TH B'DAY
By DAN AQUILANTE Post Music Critic
March 26, 2007 -- Even though Elton John sang, "I got no wish to be living
60 years on" in his opening ballad, the superstar had the time of his life
at Madison Square Garden last night.
It was John's 60th Madison Square Garden sell-out concert - and it doubled
as his 60th-birthday bash.
Former President Bill Clinton welcomed John to the "60-year-old club,"
comics Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams roasted the pianist, ribbing him
about his same-sex marriage, and his writing partner of 30 years, Bernie
Taupin, rallied the house to join in a chorus of "Happy Birthday."
The tribute portion of the concert saw the Garden retireJohn's number -
"60" - with a banner in the rafters.
There's irony in retiring anything to do with the singer after this show.
This was one of the liveliest concerts he's played in years, despite the
audience's reticence in moving to the music, even when John and his band
laid down a funky tune like "Honky Cat."
The turning point in this show was clearly "Benny and the Jets." With a
single strike of a key on the piano, the song's first note unglued most of
the fans from their seats. From then on, John owned the
Garden.
