Timberlake delights audience; show plays like coronation

With apologies to Thomas Wolfe, Justin Timberlake proved you can go home again.

After a well-received run of dates in Europe, Timberlake kicked off the second leg of his North American "FutureSex/LoveShow" tour in Memphis with a concert at FedExForum Monday night.

The scene in and around Downtown was nothing short of electric, with the concert capping an eventful day that saw the Millington native awarded with his own honorary musical note on Beale Street.

What appeared to be a near capacity crowd of 18,000-plus was on their feet as Timberlake took the stage. Clad in a sharp-fitting designer suit, the 26-year-old was greeted by a truly expectant audience -- comprised largely of young women -- who screamed, shouted and squealed at the singer's every utterance.

Backed by a 14-piece band, Timberlake performed in the round. The high-tech stage setup and vibrant mix of lighting and video images created a dynamic atmosphere matched by his energetic singing and dancing.

The show marked his first full performance in Memphis since an intimate gig at the New Daisy Theater last year. And he seemed, from the outset, to evince a confidence that was clearly well-earned.
