Country star connects with fans in three-part show

Keith Urban was clearly grateful to be back on the road.

"I've had a heck of a roller-coaster ride since this record came out," Urban admitted to his fans Friday night at San Jose's HP Pavilion as he took the stage alone for his first encore.

After thanking them for their support during his recent troubles - he was in the Betty Ford Clinic when his album "Love, Pain & the whole crazy thing" came out in November - Urban dedicated "Got It Right This Time" to his wife, actress Nicole Kidman. The straightforward delivery - just Urban with a piano and a drum machine - of the Billy Joel-esque love song was simple and heartwarming.

It was the most poignant moment of a mostly upbeat show, the Australian country star's first in the Bay Area since 2005.

The set began nearly two hours earlier when Urban and his versatile four-piece band emerged to an expanding video image of a heart and the sound of an accelerating heartbeat. They kicked off the proceedings with the new album's leadoff track, "Once in a Lifetime," under lighting so flat you would almost think they had just come out for a quick sound check before the real show began.

But as the band hit the chorus, the stage lit up, and the giant high-def screen behind the band displayed a crystal-clear image of the action, captured from above by one of those flying cameras that follow punt returns on "Monday Night Football."

The show broke down into three sections.
