Boys of blink-182 getting better with age
By MICHAEL D. CLARK
Has blink-182 grown up?
Gone are the days when the group's concerts featured billboard-sized curse
words burning above their heads, and album titles like Enema of the State.
Then again, this is blink-182.
They are older, wiser and better performers than they were the last time
they were in town two years ago, but "mature" isn't exactly the word that
should be ignited as the backdrop just yet.
The guys in the band may be married, and some fathers, but
guitarist/vocalist Tom Delonge, bassist/vocalist Mark Hoppus and drummer
Travis Barker still consider cargo shorts formal wear. At the Cynthia
Woods Mitchell Pavilion on Wednesday, the between-song potty humor was
reduced, but they still belly laughed at each other's "Yo' mama" jokes.
"I smell pot," shrieked Delonge halfway through the group's 80-minute set.
Yes, he did. Blink-182 followed "Spanglish" hip-hop consortium and
marijuana activists Cypress Hill on stage. There was a 30-minute break
between sets, but the aroma of rapper B Real's self-described "Bob
Marley-sized spliff" hung in the air much longer.
