Beastie Boys throw a playful, rockin' party under the pavilion tent
By Sarah Rodman, Globe Staff | August 8, 2007
The Beastie Boys once boasted they
could "rock a block party 'til your hair turns gray."
Monday night the veteran New York MCs, now sporting plenty of silver on
their own domes, transformed the Bank of
America Pavilion into Boston's biggest block party with an
uproarious, frantic, and all-around jubilant show that set the standard
for hot fun in the summertime.
From the opening downbeat of the wriggly "Root Down" to the closing yelp
of the hard-rocking "Sabotage," and for an hour and 40 minutes in between,
the sometimes silly but always skilled trio were tireless party hosts.
Perhaps they were pumped up by the previous night's "gala event"
instrumental show at the Opera House or by a crowd instantly hopped-up on
the beats and bass.
Whatever the source of Ad-Rock, MCA, and Mike D's energy, they poured it
into a dynamic set that touched on every aspect of a diverse career that
began way back in 1986. There were the old-school rap-rock hybrids like
"No Sleep 'til Brooklyn" and "Brass Monkey" and snotty straight-up
punk-rockers like "Heart Attack Man." The more textured sounds of the
band's '90s output got a work-out courtesy of bouncy renditions of radio
faves "Pass the Mic," "So Whatcha Want," and "Intergalactic." And the cool
funk jams of their latest release, "The Mix-Up," found the group, all
duded up in suits, picking up instruments and giving themselves, and the
sold-out crowd, a breather.
